I have always thought of sound design as being roughly 70% of the overall experience. Here is a perfect example. try this… watch this video with the audio muted then give it another go but with the audio WAY up. You will find that pretty pictures look nice and all, but without that tasty bed of audio deliciousness then all you have is plain ol’ soup. Yea I know this sounds cheesy and disrespectful to the visual element, but imagine throwing some Enya (aka EnyaFace) as audio and BOOM it’s crap. Good Stuff! thanks Brian
Here is a quick and dirty project that Shea Sizemore and Paul Metzger “Unheralded” and Shea’s new production company in Macedonia “ShuTruk” asked me to create logo ID’s for both companies.
Unheralded and ShuTruk in a nutshell is Shea and Paul’s storytelling outlet. These guys eat, sleep, and breathe movies and are able to create quality content with very little budget. They wanted me to create these ID’s so they can be used in combination or separate pieces.
They were created with the help of Eric Smith, Paul Metzger, Andy Lancaster and Brian Pace. I took the footage and did my thang in After Effects and BOOM we have ID’s. Hope you enjoy!
I grabbed this video over at www.challengeyourworld.com/2020. I really dig the concept of rechargeable power cells based on something as simple as human body movement. The video is clever as it almost seems to make fun of the idea with its nutty soundtrack and campy graphics but leaves you with a feeling that something like this could actually change the way we power our devices thus challenging your world.
Thanks Babe for the link!
About the Video
People hike, people dance, people run! The average person walks around 6000 steps per day. That adds up to about two million steps each year, which is a huge amount of force created by a basic body movement. With Step-O-Tron, a shoe-system with an integrated newton-generator, we can capture this energy and store it on a built-in power card. This energy can then easily operate any electrical appliance using the Step-O-Tron Add-On. Now you can power up your laundry machine after some shopping, heat up your dinner after walking your dog, and operate the television after your daily run! Step-O-Tron… Keeping human energy alive!
This was completed a few months back and I finally got around to posting it on my folio site.
I’ve been doing the NC Education Lottery spots for a few yrs now at my last job but this is the first time I’ve been able to do the Lottery here at Limerick. Limerick ROCKS and as you can see in the spot they have a more defined set of 3D capabilities that makes me giggle like a little girl.
This was a great opportunity for us to use the Cinema 4d Camera export into After Effects (ok, slightly geeky stuff ahead but very cool). 3D camera export to After Effects has been around for years and I have dabbled lightly with it on past projects, for Lottery we dove in head first.
After a few rounds of boards and style frames, we got our approval. We created the 2D element stuff like: the cheering crowd (my co-workers on green screen), background city, type treatment for the theater marquee, end logo tag, and overall color treatment and lighting effects. Then it was time to create & animate the 3D stuff like the walking ticket, red carpet elements, limo, and theater building. All the camera moves were done in Cinema 4D and then we added reference points (aka nulls) for all the 2D elements, Export and BOOM! Everything can now be placed in the scene in After Effects.
Why bother with C4D camera/data export? there is a full range of answers for this but the main two would be: 1) reduced render times..the last thing you want to do is import and combine 2d elements or quicktime movies within your 3D app, this would take FOREVER to render. 2) the ability to update and make multiple version of the type (like the marquee type) as well as crowd placement. We had to deliver 4 versions with different type elements to work with the different VO’s.
I am going to throw together some quick movies to show the process. Here is a few shots from our green screen crowd. The first guy is David a fellow animator/designer…. he loves Jonas Brothers and pretended he was yelling to them, it was kinda scary.
Last weekend Artist/Editor/Co-worker Jessica Schuler (aka Sid) displayed some of her recent work at Tutto Mundo here in Charlotte, Here is her blog.
Besides being a full time editor here at Limerick, Jessica has a passion for typography and stop motion animation in any form. She titled her latest work “Mash-up” since its a mix and mash of many different media’s. Show her some love and check out the work. RESPECT!
If you’re one of those people who loves the artistic idea behind the music group, Gorillaz, you’re going to want to watch this 91-minute documentary tracking the history of the most successful animated band ever.
Bananaz, which will be released on DVD on June 1, was shot by filmmaker Ceri Levy and begins in the late ’90s at the birth of the concept band created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. The film reveals Hewlett’s first drawings and ideas for the cartoon characters of Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Check out the amazing array of musicians/artists who collaborate with the band over the six years covered in the film, with De La Soul, Ike Turner, Dennis Hopper, Ibrahim Ferrer, Neneh Cherry, Bootie Brown, Dangermouse, and D12 all making appearances.
What a great set of commercials, it captivates the audience visually then smack them right in the mouth with the product. Nice work by Paris based agency Ogilvy & Mather for Mattel.
This is Kiesha and Babe’s new venture out of Asheville. Show them some love and check it out.
